Roofline Birmingham

If you've ever looked up at your roof edge and noticed the fascias have gone one colour, the gutters another, and the bargeboards look like they're from a different decade, you're not imagining it. Most homes end up with a roofline that's been patched bit by bit over the years, a new gutter here, a repaired fascia there, and it shows. Our roofline service in Birmingham takes a different approach: we treat the whole system, fascias, soffits, guttering and bargeboards, as one job, done together, so it all matches and works as it should. It's a popular option for homeowners across Birmingham who are giving an older property's exterior a proper refresh, rather than another temporary fix.

What our roofline service includes

"Roofline" just means everything that sits along the edge of your roof, where the roof meets the walls. On a typical Birmingham house that's:

  • Fascias, the boards running along the roof edge that gutters attach to and that support the bottom row of tiles.
  • Soffits, the panels underneath the fascias that close off the gap between the wall and the roof edge, while still letting the roof breathe.
  • Guttering, the system that carries rainwater away from the roof and down to the drains.
  • Bargeboards, similar to fascias but fitted on the sloped, gable end of a roof (the triangular end wall you see on many semis and detached houses) rather than along the horizontal eaves.

We also fit dry verge systems where they make sense. Traditionally, the tiles at a gable end are bedded into mortar to keep the wind and rain out. It looks fine when it's fresh, but that mortar cracks and crumbles over time, and then you're looking at repairs every few years. A dry verge system uses interlocking uPVC units instead, clipped into place with no mortar at all. It does the same job, keeping the roof edge weathertight, but with a lot less maintenance down the line.

If you only need one part of this sorting, we cover fascias and soffits, and guttering, in more depth on their own pages. This page is about doing the lot together.

Signs a full roofline renewal is worth considering

A few things tend to point towards a full renewal rather than another patch-up:

  • Your fascias, soffits and guttering are different ages, colours, or materials because they've been replaced separately over the years.
  • The bargeboards are cracked, warped, or peeling, especially if the fascias nearby are in a similar state.
  • You've had gutters resealed or repaired more than once in the last couple of years.
  • Mortar at the verge (gable end) is cracking or falling away.
  • You're having other exterior work done, rendering, new windows, a repaint, and want the roofline to look finished rather than tired.
  • You're planning to sell and want the outside of the house to look cared for, not patched together.

If only one of these applies, it might be worth a smaller job instead, and we'll tell you that honestly rather than talking you into more work than you need.

How we work

  1. Free survey and quote.

We come out, look at the whole roofline (not just the bit you called about), and talk through what's actually needed. No pressure, no jargon, just an honest assessment.

  2. Plan the job as one system.

We agree materials, colours and finish across fascias, soffits, guttering and bargeboards together, so everything matches, rather than picking separately for each part.

  3. One access setup.

Because we're doing the whole roofline in one visit, we only need to put scaffolding or access equipment up once. That's less disruption for you and, usually, better value than paying for access three separate times for three separate jobs.

  4. Removal and fitting.

Old fascias, soffits, guttering and bargeboards come off, any timber or brickwork underneath gets checked for damage, and the new roofline goes on as a coordinated set.

  5. Tidy up and check.

We clear away the old materials and any debris, and walk you through the finished job before we leave.

Most straightforward renewals are done within a day or two, though it depends on the size of the property and what we find once the old roofline comes off.

Why choose Midlands Roofing for roofline renewal in Birmingham

We know choosing a roofer can feel like a bit of a gamble. Everyone says they're reliable until the day they don't turn up. We're a family-run business, been trading in Birmingham and the West Midlands for 18 years, and we're still run by the same family that started it. That matters because we live here too, and our name and reputation follow us around the area, so we're not interested in cutting corners.

A few things that come from that:

  • We turn up when we say we will. No vague windows, no chasing us for updates.
  • Our own team, not subcontractors. We've got 15 experienced roofers on the books, and the people who quote the job are the same people (or the same team) who do it.
  • We do the job properly. That includes telling you if you don't need the full package. If a straightforward gutter repair will do, we'll say so, even though a full roofline job is worth more to us.
  • Workmanship warranty of up to 20 years, depending on the materials and scope of the job, so you're covered well after we've left.
  • Fully insured and experienced, working to current industry and safety standards.
  • Free, no-obligation quotes, so there's no cost to finding out what your roofline actually needs.

Doing fascias, soffits, guttering and bargeboards together also just makes practical sense. One lot of access equipment instead of three. Materials and colours matched across the whole roof edge instead of a patchwork that's been added to over the years. And one team accountable for the whole job, rather than three different contractors each pointing at someone else if something's not right.

What affects the cost

We won't quote a fixed price without seeing the job, but a few things typically affect what a roofline renewal costs:

Size and shape of the property.
A detached house with multiple gable ends needs more materials and time than a mid-terrace.
Material choice.
uPVC is the most common and cost-effective option; timber costs more and needs more upkeep.
Condition of what's underneath.
If the fascia boards or rafter ends have rotted, that needs sorting before new roofline goes on, which adds to the job.
Access.
Height, nearby extensions, or awkward gable ends can affect how straightforward scaffolding or access equipment is to put up.
Whether you add a dry verge system.
Switching from mortar-bedded verge tiles to a dry verge system is an optional upgrade on top of the core roofline work.
Guttering spec.
Standard half-round guttering is cheaper than larger box or ogee-style systems, depending on the look you're after.

The only way to get an accurate figure is a free, no-obligation quote, and we're happy to talk through the options rather than just handing you a number.

FAQs

  • No, but there are good reasons to. Doing it all together means matching materials and colours across the whole roof edge, and only needing access equipment up once. If only one part is damaged, we'll tell you honestly rather than pushing for the full package.

  • They're similar boards, just fitted in different places. Fascias run along the horizontal edge of the roof (the eaves), where gutters attach. Bargeboards run along the sloped edge of a gable end, following the angle of the roof.

  • It's a uPVC alternative to the traditional mortar bedding used to seal the tiles at a gable end. Mortar cracks and needs repointing over time; a dry verge system clips into place instead, so there's far less maintenance needed down the line. It's an option worth discussing during your quote, especially if your current mortar verge is already crumbling.

  • Most straightforward jobs on an average semi or terrace are done within a day or two. Larger or more complex properties, or ones where we find rot or damage once the old roofline comes off, can take a bit longer.

  • Yes, that's part of the point of doing it as one job. uPVC roofline comes in a range of colours and finishes, and we'll help you pick something that suits the property rather than just replacing like-for-like.

  • This page covers full roofline renewal, but if you've got an urgent issue, a gutter that's come away in a storm, for example, we offer same-day emergency callouts too. Just give us a call.
